Welcome to my humble site. I’m interested in too many things, with not enough time for most of them. The photo to the left is my uncle Thomas, who died in World War 2, aged 21. I’ve been told I’d look like him, if I had any hair and had accomplished anything useful. Both my granddads fought in World War 1 and both died before I was born, but whenever I need a reality-check I think of those two young men standing thigh-deep in a muddy trench. I love learning about military history, so you’ll find a lot of that here.
Another thing I like is the outdoors. Trail running and the woods are my cathedral, and I’ve been known to run marathons. Slowly. My youngest daughter told her friends that I’d rather be alone on a mountainside, instead of at a party. I’m also too honest with my children.
I initially studied Electronic Engineering but my current role is Data Scientist. I have also been various flavors of Technician, Engineer and Manager. I pivoted to data science about ten years ago, at great personal and financial cost - and it still hasn’t bloody paid back. I’d love to develop a highly successful indie game, so I can stop pretending to be passionate about making other people rich.

People told me I needed a blog, so the name of this website was going to be YetAnotherBloodyBlogAboutDataScience.com, but I decided that wasn’t long enough. In the end, I got my inspiration from a great Dead Can Dance album from the last century, back when things still made sense. It’s an allusion to the perpetual state of ignorance that most of us insist on maintaining. Thanks for stopping by.
